The American M3 Grant medium tank also received a mauling at the hands of the Tiger in Tunisia.

The Americans found their treatment by the Tigers in Tunisia very sobering. One American colonel, reporting on its qualities in 1943, noted: ‘I have inspected the battlefield at Faid Pass in Tunisia, being with the force which retook it. Inspection of our tanks destroyed there indicated that the 88mm gun penetrated into the turret from the front and out again in the rear. Few gouges were found indicating that all strikes had made penetrations.’

Yank, the US Army weekly, could not help striking a triumphal note when it featured a knocked-out Tiger on its cover, captioned ‘This vicious-looking machine, photographed by Yank’s Sgt George Aarons during the Tunisian campaign, is a PzKw VI (Panzer Kampfwagen), which translates literally as armored battlewagon. More often it was called

the Tiger, but here with the sleeve knocked off its 88mm cannon and resting against the muzzle brake, it is definitely a tamed one.’
